Idioms Can be Confusing

When you don't know about idioms you are a babe in the woods. People will say things and you won't understand them. Here is an example of how not knowing idioms can cause a great deal of misunderstanding. There was a boy in class who liked a girl. He had heard that she liked cooking with her mom so he asked her if she had a bun in the oven. He had heard someone say that, and he thought that she would like him showing an interest in her cooking. The girl got very upset and she told him that she would give him the cold shoulder for that remark. He didn't want her to have a cold shoulder so he offered her his coat. She then said that after class she would have a bone to pick with him. He didn't know what she was saying or why she was upset with him. He thought that maybe she had some game that she wanted to play with him that involved bones. After school when she told him that that he was a chip off the old block he was really confused. He had tried to be nice to the girl. Why would she be upset when he had asked about having a bun in the oven?People will say things and you won't understand them.
